Both were a little full of their own importance. He then pulls out all the stops to get Hannah to agree to work with him so he can pass the make up test. Naturally, once Garrett takes a second look at Hannah, he can see that she is actually attractive.
It is after they have been working together for awhile that a friendship started to grow between them. It is once Hannah and Garrett start to become friends, and we start to learn more about their characters, that I start to like them both more and start enjoying the story. All the while, signing autographs and being adored by the fans who are not aware that at home he is a violent tyrant.
It is torturous to Garrett that even his team mates worship his father and lament how lucky Garrett is to have a superstar father. We also learn that Hannah was ruffied at a party when she was 15 and raped by a hometown high school hero. After years of therapy, she has moved on.
Once Hannah and Garrett become friends, Hannah asks the very experienced Garrett to help her try to orgasm so that when she and Kohl eventually date and have sex, she will not be a disappointment to him.
He makes sure that he approaches the whole thing slowly and patiently so that Hannah will not be harmed by something he does. I ended the story enjoying the couple that Hannah and Garrett had become and how they have helped and supported each other. They have experienced individually horrible situations and through their inner strength worked to be as Whole as they can. They do not whine; they do not play "the woe is me card" Let's pause for a moment and give thanks We have Hannah; from a small town with two loving, everyday parents.
They were middle class, worked hard to own a home and be part of a community. Due to a horrific event with Hannah They cannot sell, so both parents are working low end jobs and getting by.
With all of that, though, they stand behind their daughter It is with this type of love, Hannah is who she is. She is a girl who has been challenged like many She is a very pretty, natural girl. Extremely talented in the musical arts and when she sings the world drops away. She is a junior in the music program at Briar University on full scholarship. This does not pay for her food, books and other living expenses.
She also waits tables at a 50's inspired diner not far from campus. She shares her dorm room with her friend who is always trying to get her out and to parties. They both look after each other.
Hannah has had some experience with guys but nothing has given her the feelings she is able to get on her own The only interest she has had lately in the opposite sex is this new Football player on Campus Hannah has a class with him She is in this daze when Garrett Graham knocks into her Captain of the Hockey team and gorgeous Every woman on campus wants him; whether as a Puck Bunny Because he is on the fast track to Pro Hockey A class which was supposed to be easy but now is going to ruin his GPA and keep him off the team.
Garrett comes from Hockey royalty For Garrett, he hates the man for what he has done to his mother, to him and to the game He is a senior and soon he will be on his way With an F to make up and the scattered mess he made of Hannah's stuff Garrett knows what must happen When he makes up his mind about anything Hannah has no use for Garrett. She has no desire to be around him or help him.
She has other things on her mind She shuts down Garrett as nicely as she can He uses the sweet smile He goes to her diner and sits in her area. He knows she is interested in this guy It takes some convincing but finally Hannah is on board. She will only tutor him for this one make up mid term Easy peasey Except we all know what is coming Well, what happens next may follow the outline of these types of college stories But really doesn't because what happens next is written with such humor, crass, fun and then most importantly Grace Because both these two have scar tissue to work through Joking and hanging out.
Becoming friends with Garrett's team members. Garrett appreciating all the beauty and talent which is Hannah Who see him not as just the hockey star but as the guy who is smart, loves history and applies himself.
There are secondary issues addressed in this story besides the love story of these two They address all of the ugly in the world; parental violence, domestic abuse, sexual violence, bullying and drugging. All of these factors could have been over done or felt like an add on I would be remiss if I did not mention how sensual, hot and down right bookorgasmic the scenes were between Garrett and Hannah. This was not inst-lust Garrett was a dream man So what we have here is a New Adult book which treats its readers as if they are smart enough to follow a story without being manipulated unnecessarily.
Is there some angst Is there some conflict BUT is it resolved without gut wrenching long drawn out mindless crazy. It happens and then it is fixed.
The fantastic news is this is the first in a new series for Kennedy. All of the secondary characters here were interesting and have enough personalities to give us stories to come.
I cannot wait. So I whispered , " I play hockey " in her ear. They have great hands. They always wear protection. They know when to play rough. They can score from any position. Never stop until the job is done.
They love to slam bodies. When the play rough they hit from behind. Tremendous stamina and endurance. Good players score more than once a nigh She asked me to tell her the three words every girl wants to hear.
Good players score more than once a night. All other athletes like to play with balls. I was starting to worry I might actually be your type, and that's too terrifying to even contemplate.. Not entirely sure.. I say this because I have honestly missed out.. I haven't read a NA quite as perfection in a long time. These characters honestly.. YES, I made that up.. No words in the dictionary would suffice to the level of perfection. I laughed incredibly loud for someone up at 4 AM and then I cried..
When I snicker, Garrett pounces like a mountain lion. Was that a laugh? I didn't think you were capable of showing amusement.
Can you do it again and let me film it? Look at what it might have been..
The best part is that they built an unbreakable friendship.. That's what made HER different from all the other girls that Garrett 's been with.. He actually wanted her around for a change.. They both supported each other and whatever happened whether it was good or bad they came to each other.
Football players.. PSSSH who needs one of those.. Hannah , sweetheart.. I promise. I know that when she says she loves me , she actually means me - Garrett -and not Briar's hockey star, or Mr.
Popularity , or Phil Graham 's son. She loves me. The scenarios were believable and not over the top. I belong with you, You belong with me, You're my sweetheart.. The first was another hockey book by her Body Check.. When I came across this book.. I knew the name looked familiar and I can honestly say that this author has progressed and will hopefully continue to share this unbelievable talent. This book was recommended to me..
If your hesitant to read.. Feb 25, Rachel Reads Ravenously rated it it was amazing Shelves: Makes me want to reread the whole series! Covered with skate marks that nobody ever seems to notice. We've all been seeing this book passed around, and normally I'm skeptical when it's a book everyone loves because most of the time I end up hating it, but not in this case.
The Deal starts out like your typical new adult romance but it's so much more. There's a girl at college who has issues, which are said straight away at the beginning something I actually liked knowing up front so it wasn't dragged out as a plot point and a jock who needs tutoring help.
Hannah is a music major and one of the few people acing her ethics test. She has a gigantic crush on a football player who doesn't know she exists. Garrett is the school star hockey player and just failed his midterm, so he needs Hannah's help. So many people have done wonderful reviews and there's no way I could live up to them, so I'm breaking this down into what I loved about the book, because there really isn't anything I didn't like about it. There were so many great one liners disbursed throughout this gem.
I was reading them out loud to any of my friends who were in my vicinity. Here's one example: Had to force myself to go to bed before continuing on. The author had a sense of humor I just connected with. Instant Oscar for Hilary Swank. Many have said that Hannah was annoying at first, but I think I have a pretty high tolerance for annoying females because she didn't bother me at all.
Sure she wasn't into Garrett when she first met him, but this book and this story wouldn't be what it is if she had. Garrett liked that she wasn't a puck slut, and he had to fight to get her to even talk to him. The character development between the two of them was extremely well done. And Garrett, oh Garrett. Love him! He's earned a spot among my book boyfriends!!! So for everyone else this is probably the perfect amount of angst.
Thanks Jasmine for the buddy read! I think we both devoured this too quickly to go super in depth but it was lots of fun: My parting words to you all: Horror slams into me as I register what I'm seeing. I've stumbled onto a penis convention. It doesn't matter which direction I move my head because everywhere I look I see penises.

Garrett is a star hockey player at school. He aggressively pursues Hannah, a more reserved music major, after seeing that she aced a test in a shared class.
His poor score on the test will drop his GPA and result in him being benched, if he can't ace the make-up exam.
Review: The Deal by Elle Kennedy
Hannah isn't interested in tutoring the arrogant jock. He's not interested in anyone else and won't take no for an answer. Eventually, the two strike a deal and the rest is history. I can't say that I fell in love with this book, but I liked it. It took me a little while to actually like the characters, but once I did, they kept me constantly entertained.
Garrett, in particular, kept me laughing with his chauvinistic false bravado.
If you're looking for a light-hearted, college-aged romance, this might be a good choice for you. Check out more of my reviews at www. View all 19 comments.
Feb 26, Laura rated it it was amazing Shelves: She did.
I will. But right now, all I want is for this girl to smile at me again. Big time. I had so much fun reading this book I'm still smiling like an idiot and my cheeks hurt. Alright so The Deal tells Hannah Wells' story and how she's going to get her crush's attention. She's in college and she's major in Vocal Performance, she's got a hard past but she won't let anything ruin her oportunity to finally talk to Justin Kohl. Things, however, aren't easy and on top of that Hockey star Garrett Graham keeps following her around in hopes he can get her to tutor him in a class.
He needs better grades, she needs Justin's attention and when a deal is on the table Hannah has to decide if she's going to do anything to achieve her ultimate goal but when feelings are involved nothing is black and white.
Oh my gods, I laughed so hard I almost pissed myself and I also was very frustrated and I was mad, sad, in love I mean, The Deal became, in one night, in one of my favorites stories.
I'm so happy I read this book.
First we have Hannah, who's lusting over Justin and yeah, that was kinda silly but crushes ofter are. She's an amazing singer and she's quite smart and gosh she's sarcastic. I loved her. She's dealing with her life after she was raped years ago but she's over that.
Like, those kind of things are absolutely hard to get over but she's determined and she won't let what happened ruin her life. She's moved on but yeah, she's wary and you can't blame her for that.
Thing is she doesn't have a happy sex life and men don't turn her on that easily but just the sight of Justin gets her all ready. I can relate to insta-lust so yeah, I saw where she was coming from and this Justin guy is pretty hot but she thinks the man walks on water for fuck's sake.
That was one of the three things that bothered me about her. She doesn't even talk to the guy but whoa he's like the ultimate hot boy to her. But She's pretty cool and have some pretty cool friends and in some ways she was very relateable so I truly had no major issues with her.
I liked that she was bold and shy at the same time but she was also cute and sexy and caring. I really really liked the girl. Then we got Garrett. He's not mean but he's kinda assholerish. I like that in people, what can I say? He was cocky as hell and stubborn but he's got a big heart. I knew he was hiding something so, when it finally came out, I was happy.
Not happy that it happened to him but happy that I could, somehow, undertood the guy.
He loves playing hockey but what he really wants is to stop living under his father shadow. That man was a sick bastard and deserve to go to hell. I wasn't thrilled about the whole "I'm a man" concept, though.
I saw it several times in the book and I don't think that being "a man" can be used as an excuse to have sex or do things. If you're attracted to that person that's it. And I think that's the only thing I didn't like about him because I was oh so drooling over the rest of him. He was sexy and confident and he didn't run away from his feelings and he knew what he wanted. They were actually cute and hot and really funny. I loved their dynamic. I loved that they trust in each other that much.
Lynn and both book were similar but nope. This one was sexier and darker and I loved it. Something weird happened, though. Even when I finished the book in one setting and I flew through the pages I felt the book was longer than it actually was. Anyway, this is book one so I think that book two is going to be about Logan.
Because I don't think Kennedy can add more stuff on this couple without screwing things up. Don't get me wrong, I want to read more about them but a second book will only add drama and I'm happy with how things are now. So yeah, I think it'll be Logan and I don't know if the rest of the books are going to continue with Dean and Tucker but why not.
The best thing that I could do after reading The Mistake was re-reading this book. I appreciate how strong Hannah is now, like I appreciate it even more and how absolutely adorable Garrett is and how solid is his friendship with Logan and Dean and Tucker. There is no doubt I will be re-reading the whole series, once all the books are out, over and over because they're just that good.
View all 5 comments. That was surprisingly good. It was definitely NA, but the angst level was low, so it felt more like contemporary, just with coeds instead of professionals. PLUS hockey players. I bloodydamn love hockey players. Full RTC. What now Cinda Williams Chima? Are you happy? Are you proud of yourselves?!

It was an enjoyable new adult story, but it took me awhile to come to like these characters.
This is not my favorite new adult book but still much better than many of the standard tropes on the new adult shelf. This novel combines two new adult tropes, the rape survivor and the college sports star. I was not enamored with Hannah and Garrett at the beginning of the story. Both were a little full of their own importance. He then pulls out all the stops to get Hannah to agree to work with him so he can pass the make up test.

Garrett's life revolve around hockey, so when he failed in one of his subjects, he needed a tutor or else he'll be dropped by the team.
Elle Kennedy has stormed onto my radar in a huge way with this book. Heart of the Devil. Tell me the next book will be about Logan, please:
